As much as we like to hope for "our" guys to to play out their careers in perfect fashion, it just doesn't work.

Though it is interesting... Above, I said that there were 31 first-ballot HOFers since Willie Mays was inducted. Other than the 9 guys I talk about here, the only other ones who didn't end their career on their "main" team (eg, Cal on Balt., Brock on the Cards, Yount on the Brewers, Ryan on the Rangers) were Mays himself, Hank Aaron, and Frank Robinson. The other 19 guys were all either one-team guys (like Yount, Cal, Puckett, Gwynn, etc) or finished their career on a team that they embraced, for lack of a better word (like Lou Brock or Nolan Ryan or Rod Carew or Paul Molitor).

That's a better percentage than I would've expected. (Maybe the selection is biased because these are first-ballot guys?)larhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17314820003835656973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308814967611371361.post-46918473201509343932009-06-05T11:54:03.404-05:002009-06-05T11:54:03.404-05:00Terrifc, Lar. I think we, as fans, become so invested in a player when he's "ours" that we want things to work out neatly, with them being regally welcomed into retirement and "senior advisor"-hood after naturally exhausting their competitive desire. But the game is not a fairy tale, I suppose.

That said, I will cry if Joe Mauer doesn't stay with the Twins forever. The Common Manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09994070642805307798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308814967611371361.post-87425507927496437842009-06-05T07:51:43.062-05:002009-06-05T07:51:43.062-05:00This is great, lar. Gotta admit that the most interesting to me is that once upon a time, not even that long ago really, the Yankees traded away, rather than for, an expensive expiring contract. :)Billhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07840958382433052735noreply@blogger.com
